Drunk Tuesday List

30th Dec 2008 · · Link

That's it, I want to go.

This article about Popeye has really surprised me.
Next week the new Opanoid Popeye merchandise will be out, just not in the US.

I'm looking forward to the new F1 Season (if they are still around, most of the world is going into administration), but this article About Button is just silly.
Everywhere he goes something happens bad, Button is jinxed, I wouldn't want him racing with me. Even though I do believe his driving style is the smoothest on the track (what that counts for is probably nothing, but it is very SMooooooth, with a capital SMOO)*.

I started to watch this, but then my legs went (I kid you not) at the 2 minute mark, so I had to stop watching it, let me know how it turns out, it's perfectly safe by the way.

I have spent most of Christmas ignoring instructions and building kids toys to my 'own specification' because 'that's how it's supposed to be'. Anyhoo, wish I had one of these bad boys.

No Christmas is complete without Star Wars, but they forgot to put it on in the UK, B3ta to the rescue with 'A Star Wars Christmas'.

I just could not decide on a video for this week then I came across this, it is an unbelievable mash-up of all the top songs from the year, and it really is done very very well (well I think so, but then I'm a bit hung over this morning).

Well I'm off to search for the specs of a iphone nano and to try to think of an iphone app I can create to make millions (like the iFart App has apparently).

* I honestly think I'm still drunk from last night so if this is making no sense, please forgive me.

Let The Snow End

30th Dec 2008 · · Link

Weeeeelllll, it's near to the end of the year, and the Christmas period makes way for New Year celebrations.

All I can say is that my Let It Snow screen saver is still (as of this post) still the top downloaded in the apple.com screen savers and icons section and also still in the top 15 of the most currently downloaded items.

Quite impressive really as it's only 84K. The next smallest is the Christmas Balls screensaver at 864K which I also did (yay me).

It struck me today that the screen savers I try to create have always been small in size (ie I try to create as much of the graphics in the code) which to me is a big thing.

I then tried to figure out why, I think it goes back to my early days of running programs on lowly systems with less memory but getting the most of them with applications like Elite (on the BBC Micro and then Archimedes) which was such a small program with such a massive universe, that in todays standards would be probably be about 500+Megs worth.

I'm not being critical, in fact I think i'm missing a trick.

After all is said and done I just wish I had created an icon for the Let It Snow screen saver :)

Doom 1 in a browser

25th Dec 2008 · · Link

This was a bit scary for me, and I had to pull myself away from it to go to bed so I was fresh in the morning for the kids.

Doom 1 in a browser, you might need to update the flash player, but wow does this take me back.

It is so cool to see how games have moved on from this.

Doom 1 was just so groundbreaking in terms of bringing so many people together on the internet that really only thought the computer literate were entitled to it.

I will never forget a time at Cambridge with a group of friends playing on a network. Being somewhat older now I really don't have the time for these types of games (or at least not the amount of time to really appreciate them) so this was a very nice blast from the past.

Oh and Santa has been at our house :)

Merry Christmas Everyone

Nathan Lewis Tuesday List

23rd Dec 2008 · · Link

With life just begun, my sleeping new son
has eyes that roll back in his head
They flutter and dart, he slows down his heart
and pictures a world past his bed
It's hard to believe
As I watch you breathe
Your mind drifts and weaves

Congratulations Keeley and Derren on the new little nipper, whome I'm sure will be pushed into F1!

Ok a quick recap of the years Top 6 posts, it seems every other website has a top 10 something or other at the end of the year, and I've always wanted to do one, so here is the opanoid.com's top 6 1/2 Posts of 2008:

Quickies: Nipple Moustache.

Did you know that Mac OS 10.5 is (c) Opanoid 2008 (biting the hand that feeds it :)

I really don't have any patience with certain things anymore, and this Origami Millennium Falcon is one of them, anyone want to give it a try and send in a piccy?

The total end of an era

Just to think, Nathan Lewis will grow up possibly not even knowing what a DVD is, and possibly live in a world with SSD's.

That's it for today, other than the fact the website has had quite a large amount of traffic over the last month, and it's quantcast rating has dropped from 2+ million down to 707,853. I must be doing something right.

World Domination has started people :)

No music video today as the christmas song's have all taken over. But if your after something to watch I can recommend Gran Turino the Client Eastwood new movie and I urge you to stay AWAY from Saw V, it's really disappointing.

Christ to the Merry Mas all of you too'ness

Retro Screen Saver Beta for Mac

21st Dec 2008 · · Link

UPDATE: This version has been updated to V 2.1

Due to a request (yay) from Joseph I have altered the 'What Happend To' screen saver a bit for the Mac.

it's not finished by any means, but is a bit more interesting in what happens, I need to get to grips with the drawing methods as on older macs with different rendering capabilities the boxes appear to have lines between them (fast processors render if ok, but it's still a rubbish way of me doing it, I'm getting to grips with it more though so that's the next thing).

Anyway, the V2 of the screen saver is downloadable now for those that want to give it a try.

Any bug reports (even if it renders wrong) please email me at schlotts.
If you could let me know your system OS number and if possible a screen grab (I know that's asking a lot) that would help me quite a bit.

Should work on OS X 10.4+.

Update: Sorry about that, didn't have the download link working correctly, works now though.

Pogonotrophy Friday list

19th Dec 2008 · · Link

I'm going to start off this Friday with a clip of one of the funniest shows on TV, The IT Crowd.

The first episode of this new series really disappointed me, but after the early jitters it's got back right on track, pure genius.

At the end of every year many 'best of's' appear, and this and this are no exception (warning the graphic content is not nudity, but certainly graphic). And every year I say to myself I must get my camera out and take more pictures, I find that a nicely taken picture at an opportunistic moment can be so rewarding (hark at me!).

Sometimes words just don't do images justice, but this is just Such an Asshole and this has just got to be fake surely, looks like he ate the pie vendor as well as the pies.

I have enough trouble shaving without cutting myself to pieces (I think me razor now has 15 blades on it), but this guy just likes a challenge.

As this Friday is likely to be a bit slower for quite a few people I thought I'd link to the b3ta.com's last question of the week, simply called I'm going to Hell. It really is a good read.

Oh and I can't resists this image challenge image from b3ta.com, I'm not PC.

For the eagle eyed among you it may not of escaped your notice that I've not posted the follow up to my Short Story: Seven.
Well it's not as is rumored because once again I've forgotten to email it to work (ahem), it is however that I'd like to post the entire thing in one go shortly and I need to finish it off (or indeed finish it).

Hopefully over the weekend.

Anyhoo, i'm off for a bit of Pogonotrophy.

Majel Roddenberry R.I.P

19th Dec 2008 · · Link

Just read that Majel Roddenberry has passed away.

She entertained as Troi's mother, and as the ships computer.

I read recently that she was to be the ship's computer voice for the new JJ Abraham's Star Trek, I wonder if all recordings had been done, I hope so as it would be a great send off.

Rest in peace, she was 76 years young and died of leukemia.

A better than I can do article is at Aint It Cool.

Extended Version of Prince of Bel Air
It's just not right. (lyrics follow)

And the lyrics:
Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I liked to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground is where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'

I begged and pleaded with her day after day
But she packed my suite case and send me on my way
She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket.
I put my walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'.

First class, yo this is bad
Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass.
Is this what the people of Bel-Air Living like?
Hmmmmm this might be alright.
I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say this cab is rare
But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'

I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked at my kingdom
I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

Afternoon all, Jesus tees off first hitting his ball straight into the water hazard. He simply walks across the water and hits his ball just short of the green. When Moses tees off, he hits his ball into the same water hazard. So, he parts the water and puts his golf ball just shy of the hole. As the old man tees off he hits his ball with tremendous power, but hooks it badly. It bounces off a tree and hits the caddy shack. It then rolls down a path to a pond where a frog eats the ball and swims to the other side of the pond. Suddenly an eagle swoops down and grabs the frog and flies off. As the eagle is flying over the green the frog drops the ball. The ball drops directly into the hole for a hole in one. Moses turns to Jesus and says "I hate playing golf with your Dad."

Almost a quarter of drivers think it is acceptable to speed if they think the limit is too low - Tick that's me.
Drivers still distinguish between 'ordinary, safe speeding drivers' and 'dangerous speeding drivers' - Tick That's me too.
Motorists caught racing through motorway roadworks ended up being hit by more than £5m worth of speeding tickets last year. - Not been done on this, thankfully.
Of all the speeding offences 90+% are fixed penally notices. - Tick, got done by this.

Thought of the week.
Apple is very closed, they are right, everyone else is wrong (suppliers). However it was noted on a website that Apple have sent an update out for OS X that fixes graphics issues.
This is pretty much due in part to Valve releasing games for the Mac. It's further rumoured that the uptake of the games is astronomical.
Nothing Like a shit load of money to make Apple stand to attention.
